The Thomas Francis, Jr., Medal

The University of Michigan will award its first-ever Thomas Francis, Jr. Medal in Global Public Health to William Foege, who pioneered a successful strategy to eradicate smallpox in the 1970s. Foege is the former chief of the Centers for Disease Control and director of the Carter Center; he currently serves as senior advisor to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
